Travelling to the UK

Preparing for your arrival to the UK can be overwhelming. You may have lots of questions, such as ‘How do I arrange my travel?’ or ‘What paperwork do I need to have ready at the UK border?’

It is very important that you travel with the original copies of all required documents in your hand luggage. If you arrive unprepared, you may be interviewed by a Border Force Officer, and if you cannot provide the original evidence when requested, you risk being refused entry into the UK.

In addition to carrying originals in your hand luggage, we strongly advise that you also keep photocopies in your main suitcase and leave further copies with a family member at home. Having digital copies stored securely and easily accessible is also recommended.

You are recommended to take out travel insurance to cover your travel to the UK. A good policy will cover travel delays and cancellations, medical emergencies, and loss of any belongings in transit.

You are encouraged to order British Pounds currency before travelling and should bring enough to cover your immediate needs upon arrival in the UK.

For your safety, we advise you not to bring large sums of cash to avoid the risk of theft. We recommend travelling with no more than £500–£600 in cash and placing the rest of your funds on a secure card or digital account. Many students now choose to use online multi-currency platforms which allow you to hold funds in different currencies and make transactions before you are able to open a UK bank account. Please note that if you travel with more than £10,000 in cash, you must declare it at UK customs.

Once you arrive in the UK, you should aim to set up a UK bank account as soon as possible. The International Student Support Team and Student Advisors in the Student Centre can provide you with a letter to introduce you to your preferred bank after you have been fully enrolled into your course.

Manchester Airport is the closest airport to Bolton, Greater Manchester. If you arrive at Manchester Airport, you can catch a train, bus, or taxi directly to Bolton. It is strongly recommended that you arrange your accommodation before arriving in the UK, as this will give you a clear sense of direction of where you are heading from the airport and make your arrival more straightforward.
