When Marta Paruszewska graduated from the BA (Hons) Crime and Criminal Justice course in 2022, she left the University with more than a degree. She had the confidence, knowledge and practical experience to take the next step towards a rewarding career in criminal justice.
Today, Marta works as a Case Worker within UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) at the Home Office, helping make important decisions on applications for British citizenship.
Finding the right course
For Marta, studying at university was about turning a long-held ambition into reality.
English is her second language and alongside studying she balanced work and family commitments. She had also volunteered as a Special Constable for 10 years, earning recognition for her commitment to policing.
"I wanted to understand how the criminal justice system works and how organisations such as the police, probation service, prisons, the Home Office and UK Border Force work together. Choosing Crime and Criminal Justice was one of the best decisions I've ever made."
Learning beyond the classroom
Throughout her degree, Marta enjoyed exploring a wide range of topics, particularly those relating to policing.
Every module introduced new ideas and challenged her thinking, helping her develop a deeper understanding of crime, criminal behaviour and the factors that influence offending.
"I expanded my knowledge of complex theories of crime and the causes of offending. I think understanding these theories would benefit everyone working in policing because they help you understand people and situations from different perspectives."
The course also offered a variety of assessment methods, including reports, presentations, portfolios and essays, allowing students to develop a broad range of academic and professional skills.
Real-world experiences
One of Marta's favourite aspects of the course was the opportunity to learn outside the classroom.
Educational visits to London and New York helped bring criminal justice to life, while guest speakers from organisations including UK Border Force, the police, probation services and NHS mental health teams gave valuable insight into careers across the sector.
Volunteering opportunities also helped confirm she had chosen the right career path.
"These experiences really helped me understand what working in criminal justice is like and reinforced that this was the career I wanted."
Support when it mattered most
Like many students, Marta's university experience was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Teaching moved online during lockdown, which she initially found challenging.
"I really enjoyed being on campus, so adapting to online learning wasn't easy. But the support from my tutors was fantastic. They were always flexible, approachable and there whenever we needed them."
Looking back, Marta believes the support she received played a huge part in helping her complete her degree successfully.
"Our tutors were amazing. Throughout my three years, they were always available to answer questions, offer guidance and support us whenever we needed help."
Building confidence for the future
Studying Crime and Criminal Justice transformed Marta's confidence as much as her knowledge.
Researching assignments encouraged her to explore different viewpoints, challenge assumptions and develop critical thinking skills that she now uses every day in her role at the Home Office.
"The course helped me see things differently and gave me the confidence to apply for graduate careers. Before university, I never imagined I'd be working for the Home Office."
Today, Marta is proud to be making important decisions within UK Visas and Immigration, with exciting opportunities to continue progressing her career.
Advice for future students
Marta has one simple message for anyone considering studying Crime and Criminal Justice.
"If I could go back, I'd choose the same university and the same course without hesitation. These three years were some of the best of my life. The course gave me confidence, increased my self-esteem and opened doors I never thought possible."
She adds:
"Don't overthink it—just do it. You won't regret it."
Looking ahead
Marta credits the University with giving her the confidence to embrace new opportunities and continue developing professionally.
Although she's already building a successful career with the Home Office, she hasn't ruled out returning to the University in the future.
"I'm excited to keep progressing within the Home Office, gain experience in different departments and maybe even come back to study for a master’s degree. The University gave me the confidence to believe in myself, and that's something I'll always be grateful for."
