Building the Skills to Shape the Future of Education: Feyisara's Story

When Feyisara Awodele decided to study the MEd Professional Development in Education at the University of Greater Manchester, she wanted to build on her experience as a teacher and school administrator and gain the knowledge needed to make a lasting impact on education.

Today, alongside her studies, she is also volunteering as a Responder at Salford Royal Hospital, further developing the skills and confidence that will support her future career.

A passion for education

Before moving to the UK, Feyisara worked in Nigeria for five years as both a school administrator and teacher. She taught children aged three to six, as well as English across primary school age groups.

"My goal was to gain the knowledge and qualifications needed to become a more effective school leader and make a positive difference to education."

A rewarding learning experience

Throughout the course, Feyisara found every module both engaging and thought-provoking, helping her develop new ways of thinking about education.

One of the modules that had the greatest impact was Critical Enquiry and Reflection, which strengthened her research skills and gave her the confidence to undertake independent academic projects.

"I had previously completed a Master’s degree, but this experience was completely different. I learnt how to carry out research using a systematic approach, and I now feel confident tackling research projects independently."

She also found the Policy and Curriculum Development and Equality in Education modules particularly inspiring.

"These modules changed the way I think about educational policy. They helped me understand how policy, or the lack of it, can have a significant impact on children's lives. I hope to use what I've learnt to contribute to educational development in my home country."

Making the most of university resources

Feyisara credits the University's library services with playing an important role in her academic success.

"The library has been an incredible resource, both online and on campus. The Boolean search tools made finding research much easier, and having access to a 24-hour library was invaluable when working towards assignment deadlines."

Support every step of the way

Adjusting to postgraduate study can be challenging, but Feyisara found the support from academic staff made all the difference.

"The Programme Leader and tutors were incredibly supportive throughout my studies. Their guidance helped me stay focused and gave me the confidence to achieve my best."

Learning together

One of the highlights of the programme was the collaborative learning environment.

Interactive class discussions and group activities encouraged students to share ideas and learn from one another, creating lasting friendships and a strong sense of community.

"We supported each other both inside and outside the classroom, helping one another understand new concepts and succeed together."

Looking to the future

Feyisara believes the course has prepared her for the next stage of her career as a school administrator and educational leader.

She plans to apply the knowledge and practical skills she has gained to improve teaching, learning and educational leadership, particularly by encouraging collaborative and interactive approaches in schools.

Advice for future students

Feyisara would highly recommend the programme to anyone looking to develop their career in education.

"This course has broadened my perspective, strengthened my professional knowledge and given me the confidence to make a greater impact in education. I would highly recommend the University of Greater Manchester to anyone considering postgraduate study."

Looking ahead

Reflecting on her experience, Feyisara says the combination of outstanding teaching, excellent facilities, supportive tutors and a welcoming student community has made her postgraduate journey both enjoyable and rewarding.

"My time at the University of Greater Manchester has opened up new opportunities and expanded my knowledge. I feel well prepared for the future and excited about the difference I can make in education."
