From Nervous Beginnings to a Clear Career Goal: Katie's Early Years Journey

Starting university can feel overwhelming, and Katie Taylor remembers exactly how she felt on her first day.

Now studying Level 5 of the BA (Hons) Early Years and Childhood Studies at the University of Greater Manchester, Katie has grown in confidence and is working towards her ambition of becoming a Speech and Language Therapist.

Finding confidence at university

Like many students, Katie arrived at university feeling unsure of what to expect.

"On my induction day I was really nervous. I didn't know where I was going, who my tutors were or what support was available."

It didn't take long for that feeling to change.

As she settled into university life, Katie became more confident, got to know the campus and discovered the wide range of support available to students.

"Now I feel much calmer and more confident. I know where everything is, and I know I can always speak to my tutors or personal tutor if I need help with my studies or anything outside of university."

Learning something new every week

Katie enjoys the variety of topics covered throughout the course and values how each lecture builds her knowledge and prepares her for professional practice.

Every week she gains new ideas that she can apply during her placement, while also developing the academic skills needed to succeed in her assignments.

"I'm learning so much in every lecture, and I can use that knowledge both in my placement and when writing my essays. The additional reading really helps me develop my understanding of each topic."

Supportive tutors who want you to succeed

One of the highlights of Katie's experience has been the support she has received from the teaching team.

She says her tutors are approachable, encouraging and always willing to help, whether that's answering questions, recommending useful resources or providing individual guidance.

"The tutors are incredibly supportive. They're always happy to answer questions, recommend books and websites, and they genuinely want you to succeed."

Regular one-to-one tutorials have also helped Katie build confidence throughout her studies.

"The one-to-one tutorials are really helpful because they're a chance to talk about how you're getting on, discuss any challenges and make sure you have the support you need."

Inspired by personal experience

Katie's own childhood has shaped her career ambitions.

Having received speech and language therapy herself, she understands the difference that the right support can make in a child's life.

After completing her degree, she hopes to train as a Speech and Language Therapist, helping children with speech, language and communication needs, as well as those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

"I know what it's like to go through speech and language therapy, so I'd love to be able to give children the same opportunities that I had."

She hopes to become a positive role model, showing young people that having additional needs should never stop them from achieving their goals.

"I want children to know that no matter what challenges they face, they can still achieve their dreams."

Looking ahead

Katie believes the BA (Hons) Early Years and Childhood Studies has given her the knowledge, confidence and practical experience to take the next step towards her chosen career.

For anyone considering the course, her advice is simple: make the most of every opportunity, ask questions and don't be afraid to seek support.

"The support from the tutors has made such a difference to my university experience. They've helped me grow in confidence and prepared me for the career I want to achieve."
