University of Greater Manchester Services for Disabled Students

At the University of Greater Manchester, we are committed to equality, diversity and an inclusive environment for all students. We support both home and international students with physical, sensory and communication impairments, mental health conditions, long term illnesses and specific learning difficulties.

Services for Disabled Students

The Equality Act 2010 defines a disabled person as ‘someone who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities’. This includes mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and dyspraxia, neurodevelopmental conditions, such as ADHD and autism, and long-standing illnesses, such as cancer or diabetes.

Our experienced disability advisors support over 17% of our student population who have disclosed a disability or additional learning requirements. They offer confidential advice and guidance on all disability related issues in relation to accessing your chosen course of study, applying for funding and referring disabled students to other services that can offer tailored support.

Support & Success: Welcome for Neurodivergent Students

Starting university is a major life transition for any student, and for neurodivergent students—such as those with Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, or other cognitive differences—this transition often presents additional challenges. From navigating new social environments to managing executive function demands, sensory overload, and unfamiliar systems, many neurodivergent students face increased barriers to engagement, wellbeing, and academic success.

The ’Support & Success: Welcome for Neurodivergent Students’ initiative is designed to address these challenges early on by offering a dedicated space for support, information, and connection. It serves as a proactive and inclusive step in fostering a neuro-affirming university culture—one where difference is understood, support is accessible, and every student is empowered to thrive.
