Funding for Disabled Students

There are several sources of funding available specifically for disabled students to help with study-related support, living costs, tuition fees and study grants.

Study-related support

DSA eligibility and support will be determined by your funding body. Please see our DSA page (link) for further information. Please note, the information presented applies to students whose funding body is Student Finance England (SFE). Remember to check specific eligibility criteria for DSA England, DSA Wales, DSA SAAS (Scotland) and DSA Northern Ireland before you apply.

Living costs

PIP (Personal Independence Payment) is a UK government benefits plan designed to help cover the extra costs of living with a disability or long-term health condition. It covers help with extra costs associated with your disability, such as daily living tasks like cooking, washing, managing money, and mobility support. You can apply for PIP here. Please note, the Disability Service cannot support with PIP applications. Your local NHS service, Citizens Advice Bureau or some charities such as Scope might be able to help you apply for PIP.

Tuition fees

On top of your student finance maintenance loan, you may also be eligible for a special support maintenance loan. Please check specific eligibility criteria in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland before you apply.

EU and Overseas Students

Disabled students from the EU or overseas studying in the UK may be able to access several sources of support available depending on nationality, immigration status, and the type of course.

  • Disabled Students Allowance (DSA): some EU students may be eligible if they have settled status, pre-settled status, or meet the residency criteria (living in the UK for 3+ years before the course).
  • Student Finance (loans and grants): EU students with settled/pre-settled status and Irish citizens under the Common Travel Area may be eligible, too.
  • Fund for Students with Disabilities (FSD): FSD is funding from the Republic of Ireland open to Irish nationals, EU/EEA/Swiss nationals, and non-EU nationals eligible for free or reduced fees under the Free Fees Initiative. It covers similar levels of support to that provided by DSA.

Study grants

There are a number of charitable trusts and organisations that award grants to disabled students in higher education. Please search for these grants on Turn2us and Disability Grants. UK, EU and overseas students may be eligible.
