The University can support you in obtaining a diagnostic assessment for Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. These assessments are undertaken by educational psychologists who will produce a report and outline recommendations of support. Your report may also enable you to apply for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA).
Step-by-step guide on arranging a diagnostic assessment:
Step 1: If you have identified some difficulties during your course that may be related to SpLD, ADHD or ASC, please have a conversation with your tutor in the first place.
Step 2: Following your discussion, you and your tutor should fill out a disclosure form (link) confirming you are interested in accessing a diagnostic assessment through the university.
Step 3: Once we receive your disclosure form, we will email you the relevant paperwork, which you will then need to complete and return to us.
Step 4: Following receipt of your paperwork, we will email you the contact details of the diagnostician, and you will contact them directly to arrange a suitable time, date and venue for your assessment.
Step 5: Attend your diagnostic assessment.
Step 6: After your assessment, your diagnostician will produce a report and will send it to you and us, provided that you consent. We will then contact you to make an appointment with an advisor to discuss support available to you based on the outcome of the assessment.
Is there a cost or payment associated with the diagnostic assessment?
As a current student, you are eligible for funding for your diagnostic assessment, minus a £50 contribution that you will need to pay directly to the diagnostician. You can only access funding for one diagnostic assessment throughout your course of study. If you are a prospective student, you will be liable for the full cost of the diagnostic assessment (£350* approximately), but you can apply for a reimbursement if you enrol as a student at a later stage.
*Rates are subject to change
Can I use a previous diagnostic report as evidence?
If you have a previous diagnostic report, please contact the Disability Service to discuss. An advisor will review your report and inform you if adjustments can be put in place with your previous evidence.
Can I have reasonable adjustments in place without a diagnostic report?
Evidence of SpLDs, or traits of ADHD/ASC is required to put support in place. Other forms of acceptable evidence include Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) or a signed letter from your past education (school, college, other university) confirming support provided to you. For more information on disability and SpLD evidence requirements, please see this document
Is the ADHD/ASC screening a full medical diagnosis?
No, this is not a medical diagnosis. However, your screening would confirm traits associated with autism or ADHD, which would be valid to arrange support for your studies. Your screening report may also support your GP referral for a diagnosis through the NHS or other private assessment providers.
