Students from the University of Greater Manchester’s media courses gained valuable work experiences when they got to grips with a British Wrestling competition.

Photography student Michaela Ward and film graduate Alex Vanzandt leant their skills at the GB Grand Prix tournament in Salford.

They took photographs and video which will be used by the organisation over the coming weeks and months.

The work experience session was organised by Peter Davis, the owner of Birkdale Collective, which works closely with the University, attending careers fairs and giving talks to media students.

He said: “Sporting events are genuinely an experience goldmine for students looking to improve their CVs and chances of getting a full-time job.

“Two years ago I started looking at connecting students with work experience at football matches as I was finding so many talented individuals unable to make the right connections.”

Peter added: “British Wrestling have been amazing and so welcoming to students. We are really looking forward to planning next year’s events already.”

Birkdale Collective provides award-winning career solutions for companies, individuals, educational institutions and charities. Its team comprises internationally experienced professionals and coaches, who have been involved in big and small companies.

Craig Anthony, Chief Executive of British Wrestling, which is the national governing body for wrestling in the UK, said: “I'd like to personally acknowledge the brilliant support from the student volunteers organised by Pete from Birkdale Collective during our recent GB Grand Prix.

“The high-quality photos and video they captured were absolutely vital for showcasing the competition. This media coverage is a huge asset to British Wrestling, providing a resource that we simply couldn't have afforded otherwise.”

British Wrestling governs Olympic and Commonwealth styles of wrestling and other styles within the remit of United World Wrestling, as well as other indigenous forms of wrestling. The governing body has its base in Salford.

The GB Grand Prix 2025 brought together athletes from Germany, South Africa, Albania, USA, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Lithuania, Spain, Hungary and GB wrestlers in two age categories and various weight limits.
