University named sixth in England’s social mobility index

The University of Greater Manchester has been named as one of the best in England for improving the life chances of our students and ensuring they have a bright future ahead of them.

We have been ranked sixth for graduate social mobility, which measures how many socio-economically disadvantaged graduates an institution takes in, as well as their outcomes.

The position in the 2025 English Social Mobility Index using data on access, continuation and outcomes for undergraduates, recognises our commitment to ensuring financial circumstances never limit a child’s access to an exceptional education.

Dr Greg Walker, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Greater Manchester, said: “We are proud to be placed so high once again in this important social mobility index.

“The University is committed to ensuring both excellence and access. We work to ensure that all students achieve, thrive and progress into successful careers.

“One of our key aims is to make a difference for our students. As an institution rooted in our community in Bolton, we help transform the lives of all our students by dismantling barriers and helping them achieve their potential.”

The index combines data on the proportion of a university’s intake that are from the two most deprived groups, whether they continue their studies or not, how they progress once graduating and median salaries of graduates.

Salaries are weighted to account for differences across the country.
