The University of Greater Manchester Medical School marked a historic moment as it welcomed its first cohort of MBChB Medicine students.

Dr Greg Walker, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Greater Manchester, addressed around 40 international students in the state-of-the art building in the grounds of the Royal Bolton Hospital.

He celebrated the University’s 200-year legacy, while highlighting its cutting-edge facilities, the excellence and integration of UK medical education and the ambitious vision for healthcare innovation in Greater Manchester.

He urged the students to embrace integrity, humility, and dedication as guiding principles in both their studies and their future medical careers.

The landmark occasion was the start of an exciting journey for the future doctors. They will study in one of the UK’s newest and most innovative medical schools, in the purpose-built £40m building.

Professor Iqbal Singh CBE, Pro Vice Chancellor of Medicine, highlighted the significance of the day.

He said: “This is an extremely proud day. This is a culmination of more than three years of dedication and commitment by our team. Welcoming our very first cohort of medical students marks the realisation of a shared vision, to develop compassionate, skilled and patient-centred doctors who will make a real difference to healthcare locally, nationally and globally.

“These human values of dignity and compassion are embedded within all of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.”

Professor Arpan Guha, Dean of Medicine, added: “We are delighted to begin this exciting chapter in the history of the University of Greater Manchester Medical School.

“Our induction programme will ensure students feel supported and inspired as they take the first steps towards a rewarding and meaningful career in medicine.”

As part of their induction, students have been engaging in practical sessions exploring wellbeing support, religious networks and A Day in the Life of a Medical Student, as well as guest lectures from leading healthcare providers.

These experiences are designed to help students understand the academic environment, the breadth of support available, and the professional expectations that will shape their five-year MBChB journey.

Crucially, students have also had opportunities to meet faculty members, visiting lecturers, representatives from the Students’ Union and the professional services team, with the first cohort already demonstrating remarkable enthusiasm, professionalism, and commitment.

As the inaugural Cohort of 2025 embarks on its studies, the University of Greater Manchester Medical School looks forward to shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals, leaders who will combine clinical excellence with empathy, compassion and patient-centred care.

The Institute of Medical Sciences building, which houses the University’s state-of-the-art medical school, was awarded £20m from the Levelling Up Fund (LUF) in 2021. The University provided an additional £20m to the project.
