Champions! University of Greater Manchester football team wins league with games to spare

The University’s first X1 football team is celebrating after winning the league – with two matches left to play.

The team were comfortable winners of the Men’s Northern Tier 6 and it is the first time in years that they have topped the league.

The players are also on a strong run of form in the Men’s Northern Conference Trophy.

UGM beat Edge Hill University in the quarter-final 2-0 and will face the University of Liverpool on Wednesday (Feb 25). The winners will play in the final on 11 March.

Tom Halligan, Duty Officer at the sports centre in Bolton One, said: “It is the first time for as long as anyone can remember that the University’s football team has won the league, so it is fantastic news.”

Tom, who is also studying for a Master’s and plays in the UGM team, added: “We have some great players and have been on good form all season. We are looking forward to playing Liverpool this week for a place in the cup final.”

Jason Pendlebury, Director of Sports and Outdoor Learning at the University, said: “We are all very proud of the team’s success this year – now let’s hope they can do the double and win the trophy too!”

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) manages the league system.
