Barnet and Southgate College Celebrates Higher Education Graduation at Barnet Church

Barnet and Southgate College proudly celebrated the achievements of its Higher Education (HE) students at a graduation ceremony held on Thursday 23 April, at St. John the Baptist Church, Barnet. The event marked a significant milestone for graduates, their families, and the College, highlighting academic excellence and the continued success of its university partnerships.

Among last year’s cohort, several students stood out for their outstanding academic performance on the BSc Top-Up Degree in Business Management, achieving upper second-class (2:1) honours. These high-achieving graduates include Magda Alexandre Teixeira Da Silva, Wennette Wade, and Joy West, all of whom demonstrated exceptional commitment and academic ability throughout their studies.

In addition, Fengling Fan was recognised for her strong performance on the BA Top-Up Degree in Events Management, further exemplifying the quality and diversity of student success across the College’s Higher Education programmes.

The graduation ceremony also celebrated the College’s long-standing and successful partnership with the University of Greater Manchester (formerly the University of Bolton), which has been in place since September 2014.

Through this collaboration, the College has delivered a range of Foundation Degrees and Top-Up Degrees in Business and Events Management, enabling students to access high-quality higher education locally.

The ceremony was honoured by the presence of Dr Greg Walker, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Greater Manchester, who attended to celebrate the achievements of the graduating students and the continued strength of the partnership.

Dr Walker said:

“It’s truly wonderful to be here tonight, celebrating this special occasion and graduation ceremony. Today marks a proud moment for the graduates of both our institutions, as they leave with their certificates and well-earned success. It has been an uplifting event, an opportunity to honour the dedication and effort each of you has invested in your studies. The atmosphere has been fittingly celebratory, reflecting a fantastic achievement, and it’s a privilege to recognise and share in that accomplishment.”

Looking ahead, Barnet and Southgate College are working in collaboration with the University to recruit students for a new Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies, set to launch in September 2026, and a Biomedical course the following year. These programmes reflect the College’s commitment to expanding opportunities in key sectors and supporting career progression.

Neil Coker, CEO and Principal at Barnet and Southgate College, added:
"I am very pleased to see the continued success of Higher Education at Barnet and Southgate College. Our partnership with the University of Greater Manchester has enabled us to provide high-quality, accessible pathways for students to achieve their academic and career ambitions. It is inspiring to witness the achievements of our graduates and the positive impact they will go on to make."

Speaking at the event, College representatives emphasised the importance of accessible higher education and the transformative impact it has on students’ personal and professional development. Anthony Peter Roach, who studied Business and Management said: “No matter where you're coming from, it is where you're going, that matters. And through hard work and the right staff, anything can be achieved.”

This year’s graduation ceremony not only recognised academic success but also reinforced Barnet and Southgate College’s dedication to empowering learners and fostering strong academic collaborations that benefit the wider community.
