Students at the University of Greater Manchester raised almost £2,000 when they took part in a £10 Challenge for Bolton Hospice.
The students from the BSc Health and Social Care (with Foundation) and the BSc Business Management and BSc Accountancy (with Foundation) programmes incorporated their fund-raising effort into a learning module.
They started with a £10 'stake' from the hospice and had to raise as much money as possible.
After organising a range of creative fund-raising ideas, the Health and Social Care students collected £1,303.18 and the Business and Accountancy cohort £656.75.
Michelle Simpson, Health and Social Care lecturer at the University’s Faculty of Health and Well-being, said: “I am incredibly proud of the School of Health, Science and Wellbeing and Greater Manchester Business School students for their community spirit and creativity throughout the £10 Challenge.
“It was a friendly competition between schools, which added motivation, teamwork and engagement.”
Members of University staff who supported the students included: Georgina King, Head of Foundation Programmes; Vanessa Peace – Associate Lecturer, Entry to Higher Education Academic Programme; Michelle Simpson, Lecturer; Liba Whittaker, Lecturer and Samina Gill, Lecturer.
Samina said: “This initiative reflects the Greater Manchester Way by bringing authentic assessment into a real-world setting.”
Sarah Wilson, foundation year Health and Social Care (with Foundation) student said: “Being part of a fundraising project for this assessment gave me a sense of focus and purpose, as it was supporting a charitable cause."
Emma Mitson, Fundraiser Corporate Lead at Bolton Hospice, advised students throughout the challenge and visited campus to thank them. The presentation was attended by University Students’ Union President Saad Mehmood.
She said: “I would like to congratulate the students and their lecturers for raising almost £2k in just five weeks!
“It was great to see the students’ confidence had grown when I met them the second time, feeding back that they really enjoyed the challenge.”
Emma added: “Every penny raised makes a real difference to the support Bolton Hospice can provide for patients with a life limiting condition and their families.”
Money raised for Bolton Hospice can contribute to the following costs:
