Professor of Theatre and Film at the University of Greater Manchester David Thacker’s latest production is a moving play focusing on three key members of a grass roots amateur football club.
The Red Lion by Patrick Marber will be performed at The Kings Arms, Salford, starting on Wednesday 23 September.
The play takes the audience inside the changing room of a tiny non-league football club, where three people from three generations fight over talent, ambition and the club’s soul.
This is a theatre experience for those who live for football, as well as those who have never been to a match, about people, relationships, community and finding somewhere in the world that feels like home.
David, an Olivier Award-winning theatre and television director known for his highly acclaimed work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Young Vic, and the Octagon Theatre, Bolton, said: “I’m delighted to be back at the Kings Arms Theatre in rehearsals for my fifth production here.
“We’re loving working on this beautiful play and we were privileged that Patrick Marber was able to join us in rehearsals a couple of days ago. It confirmed our belief that we are working on a very special play and we treasured his insights as we seek to bring his text to life.
David, added: “I hope that football fans and those who don’t like football or think theatre is not for them, will take the opportunity of seeing this funny, moving and very powerful play.”
The Red Lion, starring Colin Connor, Howard Crossley and Jermaine Khalil, runs from 23 September to 3 October.
