This BSc (Hons) Visual Effects (VFX) course provides practical, hands-on training across the full VFX pipeline for Film and TV. You’ll develop skills in 3D modelling, simulation, lighting, rendering, rigging, and compositing, all supported by industry-active experts. You will also build key professional skills in teamwork, creative problem-solving, and project management as you learn to produce high quality, photorealistic visual effects for global entertainment.
Course Overview
Visual Effects (VFX) plays a pivotal role in shaping the visual storytelling of modern media—from blockbuster films and television to commercials and music videos. This course offers a comprehensive, hands-on education in the full VFX production pipeline, equipping students with the technical expertise to create high-impact, photorealistic content.You’ll gain practical experience in 3D modelling, simulation, texturing, lighting, rendering, rigging, and compositing, supported by expert guidance from industry-active tutors. The curriculum spans pre-production to post-production, including on-set data capture and digital visualisation, preparing you for real-world challenges in VFX creation.

Entry Requirements
- Any subjects are acceptable at Level 3. Subjects that support you to showcase either creative OR technical skills relevant to the study of visual effects are preferred. Creative subjects such as art and design, fine art, film, photography or media are welcomed. Alternatively, technical subjects such as computing, engineering, physics and mathematics can be a great starting point for this degree. For instance, an applicant studying A-levels in Art & Design, English Literature and Psychology would be invited to a portfolio interview, as would an applicant taking A-levels in Mathematics, Geography and History. We accept qualifications from across the UCAS Tariff, so if you’re unsure if the subjects you’re studying are suitable, or want help choosing suitable subjects at Level 3, please get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to advise you.
- You should also have five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above (or equivalent), including English and Mathematics.
- You'll be required to attend an interview and provide a portfolio of appropriate work. Typically, portfolios are centred on one of the following areas: art, life drawing, painting, design, games, media, sculpture, photography, video editing, film, web design, computing based or technical projects. We’ll also take any previous work or experience into account when making a decision on your application.
- The quality of a portfolio will be judged alongside traditional UCAS point-bearing qualifications to determine the success of an application; we, therefore, give special consideration to applicants without the above qualifications who have a strong portfolio.

Home Undergraduate Tuition Fee Adjustment
The tuition fee applicable to the first year of your programme of study is confirmed in your offer letter. The tuition fee set is based on the regulations and guidance in force at the time of offer but remains subject to adjustment in accordance with any government-approved inflationary increase. The University reserves the right to amend tuition fees for all years of study, including the first year, by no more than the maximum increase permitted under legislation and regulatory guidance issued by the UK Government and the Office for Students.

Teaching & Assessment
You'll be expected to attend formally timetabled classes, including lectures, tutorials, and tutor-led in-class exercises, and engage with case studies, laboratory activities, investigations and assignments, in groups and individually. All these activities are designed to help you acquire and develop appropriate concepts, knowledge and skills. Our personal tutor system underpins all our teaching and provides one-on-one support, peer support and individual care and attention.
Other teaching methods, such as open-ended projects, and design, make and test activities, provide opportunities to develop creativity and innovation skills. These are designed to meet the professional body accreditation requirements and help you apply, assimilate, and integrate your understanding of the course material.
Personal study time is required, and we'll assess your progress through a strategic blend of project or design reports, portfolios, presentations, and other assignments. Some assessments contribute to your final module marks, while others are designed to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, and where you need to seek extra support from course tutors.
