Application Forms

Make your application count.

An application form gives you the opportunity to show how your skills, experience and interests relate to a role. Take time to understand what the employer is looking for and provide clear, relevant examples.

Before you start

  • Read the full application and any instructions carefully.
  • Research the organisation and role, including the person specification.
  • Allow enough time to complete the form before the deadline.
  • Keep a copy of your completed application to help you prepare for an interview.

Common sections

Work experience

Include paid work, volunteering and placements. Focus on the skills and experience you developed and how they relate to the role.

Education and qualifications

Include relevant qualifications, including those where results are pending. Use the additional information section to explain anything that may need further context.

Competency-based questions

Use specific examples to demonstrate your skills and strengths. Explain what you did, how you approached it and what you learned or achieved.

Additional information

Use this section to provide relevant information that supports your application. Keep your response clear, focused and easy to follow.

References

Choose people who can comment on your academic, work or volunteering experience and ask for their permission before listing them. Keep their contact details available in case they are requested.

Matching your skills to the role

Read the person specification carefully and identify the essential and desirable criteria. Use examples to show how your experience relates to these requirements rather than simply stating that you meet them.

Use clear headings and concise examples to make relevant information easy to find.

Application tips

  • Draft longer answers before adding them to the final form.
  • Use positive, active language such as achieved, organised, coordinated and evaluated.
  • Be concise and answer each question directly.
  • Check your spelling, grammar and answers before submitting.
  • Make sure you submit your application before the stated deadline.

Speculative applications

A speculative application involves contacting an organisation when they haven’t advertised a specific vacancy. You could enquire about potential opportunities such as work experience, placements or employment.

Research organisations that interest you and explain clearly why you are contacting them and what type of opportunity you are looking for. Tailor your CV and cover letter, address them to a named contact where possible, and follow up appropriately.
