University of Greater Manchester professor ‘honoured’ after receiving lifetime achievement award for research

Professor of Psychology Jerome Carson said he was “honoured” to be presented with the first ever lifetime achievement award for research by the University of Greater Manchester.

Professor Carson received the award at the University’s annual TIRIAE Conference from Assistant Vice Chancellor (REF) Professor Patrick McGhee, who also chaired the judging panel.

Professor Carson has produced more research outputs than any other academic in the history of the university.

He is currently second in the world in the field of autoethnography and fifth for post traumatic growth.

Along with other colleagues, he has authored eight academic books in the last four years. Since his arrival at the university in 2012, he has supervised 36 PhD completions, 86 Master’s dissertations and 127 undergraduate projects.

Professor Carson said: “This award is a great honour and, although I am now 68, I have no intention of retiring or indeed slowing down. The University of Greater Manchester has an outstanding reputation for the quality of its teaching and also the student experience.

“Along with other colleagues I am determined to improve the research standing of the university. This has not been an individual effort. All I have achieved has been in partnership with other academic colleagues and our students.”

Professor Carson’s books and papers have been written in collaboration with more than 200 other people, showing true student and collegial engagement.
