A team of final year Gaming students from the University of Greater Manchester dominated a showcase competition involving 15 other universities and colleges.
The University of Greater Manchester team won prizes in three of the five categories they entered: they came first and second in Games Art, third in Games Design, and third in Best Games Development Team, at the Game Republic Student Showcase 2026.
The winning Game Development team members were Emily Seddon, Will Kimber, Jamie Hall and Tommy Deluce, from the MA Games Development course.
Best Artist of the show was Harry Whitehead, from the Games Art BA (Hons) course. He won personal mentoring from staff at game developer Atomhawk.
Zara Shah and Ben Sloane, also from the Games Art BA (Hons) course, gained high praise from the game industry art judges.
More than 200 students competed in eight categories: Game Art, Game Animation, Game Technology, Game Narrative Design, Game Level Design, Game Design, Game Audio and Best Team.
The competition, that tours Universities and Colleges in the Game Republic network, took placed at the University of Salford earlier this month. In its 18th year, it sees leading game studios who have made some of the biggest global games titles judge the eight different awards.
The students’ work was judged by leading games studios who have worked on global hits including Team17 (Worms, Overcooked), Pitstop Productions (Baldur’s Gate), Atomhawk (Call of Duty), Double Eleven (Red Dead Redemption 2), Red Kite Games (Hogwarts Legacy), Revolution Software (Broken Sword) and Sumo Digital (Fallout 4).
Baz Armstrong, Senior Lecturer: Games Art and Programme Leader MA Games Development, at the University of Greater Manchester, said: “It was amazing that our students performed so well against so many other universities and tough competition.
“We are very proud to have won prizes in three of the five categories we entered, which were judged by the best in the business.”
MD of Game Republic Jamie Sefton said: “I think it was one of the best years we’ve ever had. Congratulations to everyone in the Showcase – all the students and course tutors should be very proud as their games and projects absolutely wowed the judges.”
