Statement from the University of Greater Manchester

The University of Greater Manchester community is shocked and saddened to hear of the death of Baroness Helen Newlove.

Baroness Newlove received an honorary doctorate from the University for her outstanding services to Victim Support in 2017 and was appointed Pro Vice Chancellor two years later.

In partnership with the University and Bolton Muslim Girls’ School, she launched an initiative called Mentored with Newlove in 2022 which gave students in year 10 the opportunity to be mentored and inspired to achieve their highest aspirations.

Dr Greg Walker, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Greater Manchester, said: “We are all shocked at this terribly sad news.

“Helen was passionate about helping people from a wide range of communities and especially giving opportunities to disadvantaged young people, as well as her incredible work to give a voice to victims of crime after her own appalling experience.

“She was a wonderful, caring person who made a huge difference with the work she carried out and was very much respected and admired by the university community.

“On behalf of everyone at the University of Greater Manchester, I would like to send our sincere condolences to Helen’s family at this sad time.”
