Life Lounge

The Life Lounge provides mental health and wellbeing support for students at the University of Greater Manchester. We offer free and confidential support to students experiencing a range of mental health and wellbeing concerns.

Explore the tabs below to find out more about the support available.

To schedule your first appointment with us, please complete our registration form. Our team will aim to contact you within two working days of receiving your referral.

Our Wellbeing Advisor is the first point of contact at the Life Lounge and oversees referrals to the service. They will arrange your initial triage appointment and help you identify the most appropriate support available through the Life Lounge based on your circumstances and preferences.

Your triage appointment will be conducted by one of our two Wellbeing Coordinators or our Senior Wellbeing Coordinator, who are based within the Life Lounge and the Medical School. Sessions can be completed in person, remotely via Zoom or by telephone.

Following your triage, you will be advised about the support and interventions that may be available to you.

Our Wellbeing Team can offer up to three Wellbeing Reviews following your triage to provide ongoing wellbeing support and review the concerns identified during your triage appointment.

They also facilitate a range of Wellbeing Workshops covering topics such as Stress Management, How to Sleep Better and Wellbeing & Mindfulness.

Our two Mental Health Advisors support students with a range of mental health and wellbeing needs, including students who may be experiencing a mental health crisis or a significant deterioration in their mental health or mood.

They complete mental health and risk assessments and can offer up to six sessions of short-term, solution-focused intervention where this is considered appropriate.

They can also make referrals on your behalf to the Greater Manchester Universities Student Mental Health Service and other specialist services within the University and externally, where appropriate.

Our Mental Health Advisors can also refer you to their Social Prescribing pathway. This is a non-medical approach that can help you access local activities and support services that may support your health and wellbeing.

We offer a range of therapeutic interventions facilitated by our two full-time counsellors and trainee counsellors.

Counselling is a form of talking therapy where you can access a confidential space to talk through personal challenges you may be experiencing.

Our therapists offer a range of counselling modalities, including Person-Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR).

Our team of therapists are guided by and adhere to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework.

We have a number of therapy dogs that visit the University throughout the academic year and during special events.

Students can spend time with the therapy dogs as an opportunity to take a break, spend time with animals or talk to a member of the Life Lounge team about whether this activity may be suitable for them.

We work alongside Pets as Therapy and Therapy Dogs Nationwide to ensure that our therapy dogs are appropriately assessed in accordance with the relevant organisation’s requirements.

The Life Lounge has a relaxation area and a sensory room available to students who would like to use a quiet space to support their wellbeing.

Both spaces are available during Life Lounge opening times and do not require you to have referred into the service. You can ask the Wellbeing Advisor about using either space when you visit the Life Lounge.

Our relaxation area contains seating, a fish tank, mindful activities and a range of resource leaflets.

Our sensory room is a more private space with calming lighting and music and soft furnishings such as bean bags.

We have worked alongside the NHS to provide our students with access to a range of self-help guides covering topics such as stress, anxiety and depression.

They provide information about common mental health difficulties and suggest practical ways to help you understand and manage some of the thoughts and feelings you may experience.

The guides have been developed by NHS Clinical Psychologists.
