TIRIAE Agenda

Teaching Intensive, Research Informed, Assessment Enabled (TIRIAE)

Teaching Intensive, Research Informed, Assessment Enabled (TIRIAE) is a core educational strategy underpinning best practice at the University of Greater Manchester (UGM). This model is founded on the principle of delivering high-quality, intensive teaching alongside personalised academic support for both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students across all disciplines.

Central to this approach is the integration of rigorous, up-to-date research, which informs both curriculum content and pedagogical delivery. TIRIAE positions students at the heart of the learning experience, aiming to cultivate distinctive academic strengths and enhance the University’s competitive standing within the higher education sector.

What does this mean in practice?

  • Teaching Intensive: Emphasises high-quality, active learning through structured and focused delivery models (e.g. block teaching), enabling deeper engagement and stronger staff–student interaction.
  • Research Informed: Ensures that teaching is grounded in current research and evidence-based practice, promoting academic relevance and critical inquiry.
  • Assessment Enabled: Prioritises continuous, formative assessment and timely feedback to support ongoing learning, rather than reliance on high-stakes, summative examinations.

UGM’s ambition is to establish itself as a leading TIRIAE institution by enhancing student outcomes, engagement, and real-world applicability of learning. This approach integrates teaching, research, and assessment into a cohesive framework, supported by aligned academic and professional services across the University.
