Sean Freeman

Lecturer

Sean Freeman is a registered nurse, Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Greater Manchester, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). Before moving into higher education, he worked across a range of clinical and operational roles within the NHS, beginning his career in Accident and Emergency nursing before progressing into urgent and emergency care management. He later worked as an Urgent and Emergency Care Manager for Lancashire and South Cumbria, supporting service delivery across the region. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sean worked as a Ward Manager at the NHS Nightingale Hospital in Manchester.

Since joining the University in 2020, Sean’s work has focused increasingly on digital education and technology-enhanced learning within healthcare. He completed an MSc in Digital Education at the University of Edinburgh and is currently undertaking doctoral research in E-Research and Technology Enhanced Learning at Lancaster University.

Sean’s research focuses on technology-enhanced learning within healthcare education, particularly the use of digital and mobile learning approaches to improve engagement, accessibility, and learner experience. His published work has explored areas including gamification in nursing education, mobile learning, asynchronous and flexible learning design, digital literacy, and the use of emerging technologies to support healthcare students and the wider workforce. In previous roles as Digital Lead for Health, Science and Society and as a Senior Lecturer in Nursing, he contributed to the development and curriculum design of national online learning programmes for healthcare professionals.
