Course Overview

This standalone CPD module provides a clear and practical introduction to advanced diabetes care and management. Designed for healthcare professionals across primary, secondary, and community settings, it offers an evidence-based, multidisciplinary approach to supporting people living with Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes.

You will explore the growing prevalence of diabetes and its impact on individuals, services, and society. The course covers the biomedical, psychological and social factors influencing diabetes, helping you understand why people with diabetes require personalised, ongoing support.

We will examine behaviour change, treatment adherence, self-management challenges, and the use of motivational interviewing. You’ll also enhance your understanding of contemporary diabetes care models, holistic reviews, and risk assessment. Key complications—including hypoglycaemia, hyperglycaemia, cardiovascular risk, neuropathy and foot health—are explored using real-world case examples. You will also consider medication optimisation, polypharmacy, and the role of emerging technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pumps.

This course aims to strengthen your clinical confidence and support you to make informed decisions that improve patient outcomes. A basic understanding of long-term condition management is recommended for participants.

Home Undergraduate Tuition Fee Adjustment

The tuition fee applicable to the first year of your programme of study is confirmed in your offer letter. The tuition fee set is based on the regulations and guidance in force at the time of offer but remains subject to adjustment in accordance with any government-approved inflationary increase. The University reserves the right to amend tuition fees for all years of study, including the first year, by no more than the maximum increase permitted under legislation and regulatory guidance issued by the UK Government and the Office for Students.

The University will apply any adjustment consistently across affected student cohorts and will give reasonable notice to students of any confirmed change to the published fee before the start of the relevant academic year.

This approach ensures that tuition fees remain compliant with applicable legislation, proportionate to inflationary changes, and consistent with government policy linking permitted fee uplifts to the maintenance of high-quality education and outcomes. Teaching & Assessment

Our experienced and knowledgeable team will deliver the theory using a blended learning approach. Sessions will cover core knowledge, clinical decision-making, and management skills related to diabetic patient care. These will be conducted face-to-face, in class, online, and in dedicated simulation suites. We'll introduce you to topics through keynote lectures involving a mixture of theory and case-based discussions around clinical scenarios. Following the lectures, we'll expect you to explore each topic in greater depth, and in relation to your own practice, through self-directed learning. These activities will increase your understanding of diabetes care and its management. We'll encourage you to consider contemporary research evidence and use this to inform your clinical decision-making and information exchange with patients and colleagues.

You'll have two summative assessments: an in-class assessment of 50 multiple-choice questions and a 3000-word, case-based written assignment. Before your summative assessments, you'll be well supported, including formative in-class assessments and tutoring for your written assignments
