An internship is where you provide paid employment for an undergraduate or graduate for a few weeks or months
A work placement is where a student comes to work in your organisation for 9-12 months and the placement is usually based around their current learning in the curriculum. This usually happens between their second and third years of study.
Recruiting an intern can be a cost-effective way to resource your smaller-scale projects, events, research or market testing. We ask that you give interns tasks that stretch and challenge them, ones that are often associated with professional level roles.
If you are looking for a student intern, May to September is a good time of year as they tend not to have lectures. During term-time, students can only work for up to 16 hours each week in order to protect their study time.
Many of our courses include a work placement. This is usually a mandatory element of their degree programme. They are expected to make a positive contribution to the work of your company or organisation and inject fresh ideas.
Placements can be hugely rewarding for both parties. By providing a placement, you will have access to our diverse talent pool whilst giving students access to invaluable on-the-job training. Many employers use these placements as a way of interviewing prospective employees, and often they go on to recruit the student afterwards.
Other benefits include: ability to address skills gaps in your business, cost effective hiring solution providing a good return on investment, opportunity to publicise your business to future graduates and students are good brand ambassadors - they tell their friends and classmates about the good experience they have had at the company, thereby encouraging others to apply.
The timing and duration of the work placement could be flexible to meet your business need too. Students can start at the busiest time of year e.g. summer when your employees are on long holidays

Our students are recruited based on your business needs as we assign students that are studying in fields that directly inform and influence your business's area of work; this allows students to bring the skills and knowledge learnt throughout their studies to benefit your business.
Student placements form part of their academic work assessment and the tasks they undertake should and will often relate directly to their programme of study.
You need to think through what you want a student to do. Will you require specialist skills and experience?
Be explicit about your needs and be clear about the tasks and objectives you expect them to achieve. This will help to keep the placement on track and provides a good platform for future evaluation.
