Bursaries for Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Programmes

The Department for Education have recently announced the bursary funding available for initial teacher training (ITT) and initial teacher education (ITE), as below:

ITT – Secondary School (our programmes are Secondary PGCE (11-16) maths, English, computing, and modern languages.

Funding: initial teacher training (ITT), academic year 2023 to 2024 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

For 2023 to 2024, we are offering bursaries of:

Subject Bursary

Computing, Mathematics

£27,000

Languages (including ancient languages)

£25,000

English

£15,000

Scholarships are available as follows:

French, German and Spanish (no other languages)

£27,000

ITE – FES (further education and skills) programmes – specialist pathways include Maths, English & ESOL, Creative Practice, Sport, STEM, Dance and Performance, Teaching Learners with Additional Needs (SEND)

ITE bursaries are only available for the subjects in this table, for courses starting in the 2023 to 2024 academic year.

ITE – FES (further education and skills). ITE bursaries are only available for the subjects in this table, for courses starting in the 2025 to 20256 academic year.

We are pleased to be able to announce the continuation of FE ITE bursaries for the 2025 to 2026 academic year for skilled non-graduates as well as graduates who are training pre-service to teach high-priority shortage subjects in the FE sector in England.

The pre-service bursaries are a tax-free cash incentive paid to individual trainees while completing an approved Recognised FE ITE course eligible for student support 2025 to 2026 FE teaching qualification (Level 5 or above).

Providers who have previously applied for bursaries will be notified by email once the application window has opened. Any providers that have not previously applied for bursaries and would like to do so in the 2025 to 2026 academic year, should visit our FE funding: initial teacher education (ITE) bursary page which will be updated with the 2025/26 funding manual and application form as soon as these are available. Whilst we do not yet have an official opening date, we expect to broadly follow previous years’ timelines for launch.

We are pleased to announce the continuation of FE ITE bursaries for the 2026 to 2027 academic year for skilled non-graduates as well as graduates who are training pre-service to teach high-priority subjects in the FE sector in England. Important information: Bursary funding is not guaranteed as they are provided by DfE with limited funds, and are allocated on a first come basis. Bursary applications are submitted to DfE by the university on behalf of the trainee. Eligible trainees must submit their bursary claim form and evidence to the university as soon as possible to avoid missing out. Tutors will provide guidance on how to do this. Partner college trainees must liaise with their college tutors to submit their form and evidence.
