Dr Susan Booth

Lecturer in Paediatric Physiotherapy

Graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy in 1994.
Worked as a physiotherapist for 26 years, primarily within paediatrics, in both the NHS and in a Children’s Charitable Trust. During this period, the Bath Hydrotherapy course (2001) was completed.

Masters degree in physiotherapy (Advancing Professional Practice - Paediatrics) at Sheffield Hallam University obtained in 2017. The resulting dissertation was adapted for poster presentation at the Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists (APCP) conference and later for publication in their journal in 2019.

Professional Doctorate commenced at the University of Salford in 2017 undertaking primary research with paediatric physiotherapists working with young people who have disabilities and Doctorate awarded in 2025. Abstracts from this study were presented at APCP and Salford University conferences.

Teaching commenced in 2020 at the University of Bolton as a Lecturer on the pre-registration undergraduate and postgraduate physiotherapy degree programmes. The knowledge and skills obtained within previous paediatric roles and doctoral studies inform qualitative student research projects and support taught content in paediatrics, inclusive intervention frameworks and professionalism to facilitate students towards practice readiness at qualification.

Research Interests and Research Subject Specialisms:
Particular interest in paediatrics (childhood disability), disability sport and aquatic physiotherapy (hydrotherapy), arising from previous work as a paediatric physiotherapist. Research interests exploring the role of disability sport within paediatric physiotherapy for children and young people with disabilities. Also, the use of qualitative research within research and qualitative data analysis approaches, particularly Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.
